As of the end of October 2013, preliminary reported crime data shows that reported overall incidents of violent crimes (Part 1) have decreased 8.57 percent, and property crimes reported (Part I) have increased by .12 percent in Sheriff’s patrol areas countywide, compared to last year at this time. These numbers combine to show a 1.51 percent decrease in overall Part I crimes.
In comparison, the five year (2013/2008) change in YTD crime rate for October, preliminary crime data shows that overall incidents of violent crimes reported (Part 1) have decreased by 26.05 percent, and property crimes reported (Part 1) have decreased by 10.63 percent in Sheriff’s patrol areas countywide, compared to five years ago. These numbers combined to show a 13.78 percent decrease in overall Part 1 crimes.
As of the end of October 2013, preliminary reported crime data shows there was a 0% increase in criminal homicides in Sheriff’s patrol areas compared to last year (139 YTD in 2013 and 138 YTD in 2012), and a 36.84% decrease compared to five years ago (228 YTD in 2008). 2012 had the lowest homicide rate (allowing for population changes) in Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department patrol areas since 1965.

Note: The LASD East Los Angeles Station has policed the unincorporated area of East Los Angeles and the city of Commerce for many years. Beginning July 1, 2010, East Los Angeles Station added the policing of the cities of Maywood and Cudahy. This should be considered when comparing 2012/2013 crime statistics to 2008.
